About the Author
In 2006 H. Densing received her degree in Elementary and Secondary School Education from the University Koblenz/Landau in Germany, with an emphasis in Pedagogy, Mathematics, and Philosophy. Before and during her university years, she worked as a tutor and teacher's assistant in several schools and with children of different age groups. She studied one semester abroad in Montreal, Canada, and obtained teaching experience at elementary schools in different countries. Through her experience, she came to discover that students can learn the same topic in completely different ways. Some children learn by reading and writing, others are visual learners, and some are auditory or kinesthetic learners. It was clear that she needed to design individualized, interest-oriented classes for the students to give them the chance to play an active part in the learning process and improve their memorization skills.
“A teacher needs to have a flexible teaching style that suits a child's specific learning style.”
Creating learning activities and materials fascinated her. She could see how different strategies and ideas lead to a more effective way of learning for everyone involved, including herself. When her children were born, she decided to stay home with them. All her children went to Montessori schools when they were younger, and she loved being an observer or volunteer in their classrooms. This allowed her to gain more knowledge about different ways of teaching.
After her special needs daughter was born, she started to educate herself in the fields of early intervention, occupational therapy, speech and language pathology, and special education.
“My daughter helped me to understand even more deeply that the most effective way of teaching is achieved by actively including the child in the learning process and valuing each student's interests and capabilities. Learning cannot be as successful for everyone without including various teaching methods to reach different kinds of learners.”
